Job Description

The responsibilities of this job classification include the vehicle and Systems Assembly and Integration that includes sub-component fabrication, welding, inspection, test, vehicle maintenance, and field support tasks conducted by Sterling Heights Prototype shop personnel. Provides direct support to design engineering through the entire Product development life cycle.

Work requires technical skills in the performance of Assembly, Integration, fabrication, and testing in the evaluation, repair, and maintenance of military ground combat vehicles and other equipment. Position requires the application of overall mechanical, electrical and component fabrication knowledge to include welding and machining processes. Conformance of all products to specifications and processes is required. Skill specialties must include comprehensive knowledge to manufacture, assemble, inspect and repair as appropriate.

Required Skills and Education

Required education: High School/GED plus eight years of relevant work experience

-Works from engineering drawings, sketches, samples and verbal instructions.

  • Performs layout using shop math, fundamental blueprint reading and handbook data.

  • Fabricate and build parts, assemblies, shop aids and templates from a variety of materials

  • Uses hand tools and hand power tools. Sets up and operates equipment for: shearing, sawing, routing, punching, drilling, forming, rolling and grinding, etc.

  • Using GMAW and SMAW techniques welds on a variety of equipment such as structures, fixtures, light assemblies in various positions applicable to Prototype activities

  • Performs necessary burn and heat treat operations using oxy/fuel hand torches and ovens Uses Carbon arc and Plasma arc equipment

  • Selects all tools and materials necessary and sets up and operates all welding and burning equipment necessary to complete tasks, and performs all necessary maintenance on equipment with minimal supervision

  • Notes and reports variances or discrepancies in drawings or work and report them to the supervisor or appropriate person(s).

  • Operates forklift, overhead cranes, jib cranes and hoists

  • Receives assistance and guidance on only the most complicated work
