BAE Systems Principal Control Systems Engineer in Radford, Virginia

Job Description

Due to continued growth BAE Systems, one of the world s largest defense contractors and a stable Fortune 500 Company, is hiring a Control Systems Engineer for our modernization engineering team at our chemical manufacturing facility in Radford, VA.

The Control Systems Engineer will be responsible for the design, implementation, commissioning, and troubleshooting of the complete system, including PLC/DCS controls, VFD's, HMI s, and associated communication networks for process control and/or monitoring applications.

Essential Duties

  • Develop complete control systems, including software, instrumentation I/O, communication strategy, and operator interfaces for PLC s and HMI s

  • Create and maintain all design estimates and plans

  • Perform system validation including I/O, safety interlocks, and process equipment operation

  • Work as part of team, including Process and Electrical engineering, to implement and commission chemical modernization projects for the manufacturing facility

  • Review the control system design with our customer and operators

  • Develop commissioning plans and coordinate work scope with guidance for technicians and subcontractors

  • Responsible for the installation and technical support of PLC based hardware and software

  • Understand and ensure compliance with safety regulations and quality standards

  • Assist team efficiency and continuous improvement strategies by contributing to the development of procedures / guides, training plans, process checklists and other quality solutions

  • Contribute to Hazard Analyses of process systems

  • Develop control system designs and documentation

  • Review peer projects for quality and accuracy

  • Specify and requisition purchase of hardware and software as required by project

  • Maintain and modify existing systems to support production as required

Typical Education & Experience

Typically a Bachelor's Degree and 6 years work experience or equivalent experience

Required Skills and Education

  • Education: Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering / Controls and 6 years of applicable experience. May consider other Engineering, Computer Science, Chemical Engineering or similar technical degree, with 6 years applicable experience in process, automation controls, or instrumentation

  • Ability to read and interpret technical documentation (P&IDs, ladder logic, function block code, schematics, loop sheets, manuals, etc.)

  • Experience designing, programming, troubleshooting, and commissioning PLC/HMI applications with products such as Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Automation Direct, Schneider (Modicon), or Valmet for process or automation systems

Preferred Skills and Education

  • Experience designing, programming, troubleshooting, and commissioning PLC/HMI applications with Siemens PCS7 for process or automated systems

  • Experience with variable speed drives, positioners, actuators, valves, and instrumentation used for chemical or industrial plant production processes

  • Simocode or other MCC (motor control center) management software

  • Professional Engineer (PE) or Engineer In Training (EIT)

  • Prior work experience in a chemical or hazardous material production facility

  • Experience integrating devices from multiple vendors into a complete system solution

  • Knowledgeable in computer network architectures, topologies, and hardware

  • Team oriented, self-motivated, and results driven

  • Wonderware, Rockwell Automation/Allen Bradley, WinCC, Profibus, Profinet, Modbus, TCP, or HART a plus.
