BAE Systems Mechanical Engineer I - Facilities in Radford, Virginia

Job Description

BAE Systems, one of the world's leading defense contractors and a stable Fortune 500 Company, is hiring a Mechanical Engineer for our Facilities Department to support the Radford Army Ammunition Plant in Radford, VA. This position will involve managing assigned facility projects or tasks from cradle to grave, which includes but not limited to meeting with customers to define project scope, determining conceptual design approach, developing and monitoring project budgets and schedules, handling communication during project execution, negotiating changes, creating a punch-list and certifying completion for final payment. The Mechanical Engineer - Facilities will work with craft labor (mechanics, technicians, etc.) to accomplish some tasks. Also, the Mechanical Engineer - Facilities will be supported by a project team to develop mechanical designs, drawings/sketches, scope-of-work, estimates for subcontract and materials, provide technical support and coordination to subcontractors and maintenance functions. This position serves under the direct supervision of the Engineering Program Manager.

Essential Functions

o Interact with production personnel to define and solve manufacturing/design issues and implement cost reduction ideas with regard to our products.

o Be involved in repairing and modifying manufacturing equipment

o Perform machine and component design, redesign or replacement.

o Develop mechanical systems and machine designs. Design layouts including required specifications using established engineering procedures and sound judgement.

o Plan, design, and coordinate the integration of machinery and equipment into manufacturing processes with a high level of proficiency.

o Perform project planning including scheduling, work orders, and work package development.

o Review specifications and documents for contract pre-award and post-award with subcontracting firms and/or internal crafts.

o Review drawings and other project documentation with contractors and coordinate availability of materials, tools, and equipment required for projects.

o Inspects contractor work efforts and determines final acceptance.

Typical Education & Experience

Typically a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience

Required Skills and Education

o BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or Engineering technology

o 0-2 years experience specializing in mechanical engineering related to manufacturing facilities.

o Familiar with machine design and general mechanical designs

o Familiar with computer programs such as Excel, Word, Power Point, MS Project.

o Ability to develop design drawings, scopes-of-work, and equipment specifications

o Ability to develop subcontract scopes of work, estimates, and proposals

o Ability to develop construction plans

o Ability to review design submittals from design firms and subcontractors

o Ability to provide technical support to subcontractors and maintenance department related to installation, startup, repair, and operation

o Inspect construction contractor s work and determine final acceptance

o Familiar with AutoCAD, managing projects including machine and component design, equipment arrangements, and prototype equipment design.

Preferred Skills and Education

o Mechanical Engineer with 2 years of experience in the design and implementation of mechanical systems for industrial or chemical plants.

o Experience with or educational background in project management

o Machine design or reverse engineering using AutoCAD or other 3D CAD software

o Heating, ventilation and air conditioning system design/installation

o Preventive Maintenance Programs

o Process piping design/installation

o Pump systems design/installation
