Position Summary:

The Carpenter Shop Third Class Mechanic performs a variety of skilled mechanical duties involving working with equipment, working with Nomex panel, installation of various materials and drydock block and crate building. The Third Class Mechanic operates equipment for assembly and installation; and follows specified safety policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities & Functional Knowledge:

This list is representative of the key areas of responsibility and functional knowledge required of a third class mechanic in the Carpenter shop. A third class mechanic must demonstrate a developing knowledge of the skills, functional knowledge and abilities required to perform tasks in these and related areas of responsibility.

Developing knowledge means that the mechanic understands how to perform tasks in these categories (including, but not limited to, the specific tasks identified below) and is able to complete them with minimal assistance. This also means that the mechanic has the necessary level of knowledge of the equipment, protective gear, and machinery required to complete these tasks. In some cases, as specified, the third class mechanic is expected to assist, rather than completing the task independently.

  • Equipment

  • Mobile Equipment

  • Use a hand saw (must have a hand saw as a part of personal tool set)

  • Trained or working towards being trained on using grinders

  • Fixed equipment (must be trained on and operate the following equipment)

  • Table saw

  • Planer

  • Drill presses (Material: Wood or Metal Frames)

  • Nomex Panels Plates

  • Familiar with the counter sinking process as it relates to synthetic deck plates

  • Removals and Interference (Assist with)

  • Batterboards

  • Unbolt boards

  • Draw Sketches

  • Label with material identification tags

  • Deck

  • Learning how to conduct inspections and observing how to document imperfections

  • Learning how to handle the following materials Electrical grade matting, Terrazo, PRC, Vinyl, etc.

  • False Overhead

  • Draw basic sketches

  • Basic labeling and tagging of all gridding and panels

  • Remove the panels and grids

  • Tiles

  • Remove Ceramic/Terracotta and Sound Dampening Tile

  • Handle Ceramic/Terracotta and Sound Dampening Tile

  • Installations

  • Fiber glass on the shafts

  • Assist with installing the polysulfide coating on the end of the shaft

  • Assist with installing the resin

  • Wood Decking

  • Cut the wood

  • Assist with shooting studs

  • Assist with measuring planks

  • Assist with securing with metal fasteners

  • Assist with caulking

  • Batterboards

  • Electrical Grade Matting

  • Assist with gluing, sealing, measuring and laying matting

  • Assist with inspecting for imperfections

  • Deck Coating System (Terrazo, PRC, vinyl, tile, etc.)

  • Assist with gluing, sealing, measuring and laying tiles

  • Tiles

  • Assist with Ceramic/Terracotta and Sound Dampening Tile installation

  • Learn how to properly handle Ceramic/Terracotta and Sound Dampening Tile

  • False Overhead

  • Assist with laying out and installing various types of false overhead panels

  • Draw basic sketches

  • Read basic blueprints

  • Building Crates and Hatches

  • Crate

  • Read basic specs for measurements and weight

  • Assist with assessing the equipment being crated and building crate

  • Hatches

  • Read basic specs for measurements and build hatches

  • Steps

  • Assist with measuring-up, layout, and fabricating a set of steps

  • Drydock Block Building

  • Read basic blueprints for measurements, with some guidance

  • Learn how to cut and assemble blocks, with guidance

  • Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) Handrails

  • Gather materials

  • Learn the process off GRP Handrail layout and fabrication

Required Skills and Education

Minimum education requirements: High school diploma/GED

Minimum relevant experience: 5 to 7 yrs.

Practical Theory Requirements:

A third class mechanic must demonstrate a developing understanding of working with equipment, working with Nomex panel, installation of various materials and drydock block and crate building.

Must be able to pass tests on the following:

Reading a ruler (75% passing grade)

Build a crate (60% passing grade)

Create a set of steps (50% passing grade)

Other Requirements:

  • Must be able to read, write and comprehend simple instructions

  • Must be able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral or diagram form

  • Must be able to calculate and understand units of measure, including fractions and decimals

  • Must know how to measure using a scale and tape measure

  • Must be able to wear applicable PPE (Hard hat, safety goggles, gloves, steel toes shoes, ear protection, chaps if working with chainsaw, Tyvek suits and respirators when working with certain chemicals)

  • Must be able to obtain a government access badge.
