Job Description

Position Summary:

A first class Boilermaker for the Plate Shop is responsible for installation, lay-out, assembly and replacement of boilers. The first class Boilermaker works from blueprints, sketches, specifications, layout templates, process instructions, and job orders.

Key Responsibilities & Functional Knowledge:

This list is representative of the key areas of responsibility and functional knowledge required of a first class boilermaker in the Plate shop. A first class mechanic must demonstrate an advanced knowledge of the skills, functional knowledge and abilities required to perform tasks in these and related areas of responsibility.

Advanced knowledge means that the mechanic understands how to perform tasks in these categories (including, but not limited to, the specific tasks identified below) and is able to complete them independently. This also means that the mechanic has the necessary level of knowledge of the equipment, protective gear, and machinery required to complete these tasks. A first class mechanic also is expected to strategize independently and problem-solve as appropriate.

  • Boiler System Testing

  • Pressure test the boiler

  • Know boiler system

  • Re-facing

  • Re-facing Manhole or Handhole

  • Machine the seating surface

  • Use resurfacing machine

  • Refurbishing

  • Weld and repair seating surfaces that need alterations

  • Re-facing refurbished items once altered

  • Retubing

  • Install new tubes in the boiler

  • Read a tube identification drawing

  • Expand tubes and the seats

  • Use expanders and pins to expand tubes

  • Must understand the expanding requirements based on the size of tube

  • Burning

  • Knowledgeable regarding burning

  • Knowledgeable regarding use of hook up torch/light torch

  • Blueprint

  • Read, understand, and interpret advanced blueprints to perform task required

  • Refractory

  • Lay brick work in the furnace in accordance with the drawings

  • Get through access area by opening the door on the firebox

  • Familiar with the materials to include anchor and burner tiles

  • Tack Welding

  • How to grind

  • Preferred tack welding certification course

  • Preferred SMAW and FCAW or FCA certifications

Required Skills and Education

Minimum Education: High School Diploma/GED

Minimum Experience: 4 to 7 yrs.

A first class mechanic must demonstrate an advanced understanding of naval vessel compartments, number systems and related vessel terminology for the CG, DDG, and LHD ships.

  • Must be able to read, write and comprehend simple instructions

  • Must be able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral or diagram form

  • Must be able to calculate and understand units of measure, including fractions and decimals

  • Must know how to measure using a scale and tape measure

  • Must be able to wear standard PPE and basic ship fitting tool list

Preferred Skills and Education

Strongly Preferred But Not Required

  • Basic ship fitting skills

  • Set up and perform ship fitting tasks

  • Sketch vent and develop basic patterns

  • Use CFM meter to measure and balance vent

Work galley and head stainless work, including galley equipment, stainless steel tables, stainless steel trim and flashing, water closets and urinal partitions, water closet doors and showers
