Job Description

The RF Printed Wiring Board (PWB) P2L Engineer is a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in the area of RF and microwave design as it pertains to Surface Mount Technology (SMT) printed wiring boards and printed board assemblies (PBAs). This Engineer SME provides direct support to the Printed Circuit Design, Hardware Engineering and P2L teams along with a number of manufacturing sites to further enhance our RF PWB/PBA design capabilities in the areas of Design For Manufacturability (DFM), Design For Testability (DFT), Design To Unit Production Cost (DTUPC), and Transition to Production (TTP).

The RF PWB P2L Engineer will functionally report to the P2L Capability Group (CG) Director, within the US Defense Hardware Engineering Organization. For program execution, the RF PWB P2L Engineer will work closely with both the Printed Wiring Board (PWB) Capability Group as well as the RF Converter Sub-systems CG. In this role, he will engage with the hardware design engineering, program engineering, and manufacturing teams at the earliest stages of the RF PWB/PBA design. The RF PWB P2L Engineer will remain engaged thorough all phases of the product life cycle up to and including engineering prototype, pilot line production, and hand-off to low rate production - handing off the design when mature, and ready for the production environment. Focusing on affordability, producibility, and new product introduction (NPI) activities early in the design process, the RF PWB P2L Engineer will help drive technology trends into our factories to maximize design flexibility, increase manufacturing capability and lower production costs. Core responsibilities include:

  • Working with the RF Converter Subsystems Capability Group, integrate RF PWB layout into the PWB Design process updating tools and process flows as required. Utilize industry best practices

  • Establish and help enforce unified best practice for RF PWB Design at all sites and include entrance criteria to avoid unnecessary work

  • Provide technical expertise in review of RF SMT circuit card product. Work closely with PC Design, RF Converter Sub-systems CG, and Manufacturing to archive producible RF PWB and PBA designs

  • Assist the P2L Director in establishing a rapid engineering prototype capability for RF PWB/PBA designs. Provide rapid prototyping technical support working with both Hardware Engineers and PWB vendors / Contract manufacturing suppliers as appropriate

  • Lead the review of RF PWB stack-up and material construction; serve as liaison with PWB bare board fabricators for producibility/DFM reviews. Work to resolve outside PBA Supplier issues

  • Lead the review of RF PBA component lay-out prior to circuit routing to optimize assembly and PWB fabrication. Provide feedback on RF PBA component selection to electrical engineering

  • Provide input to mechanical considerations/envelope drawings related to the RF PBA product

  • Provide the technical ability to recognize shortfalls in the RF PWB/PBA process or tools to identify changes to meet today s technology requirements

  • Possess intimate knowledge of IPC 610 and J-STD 001.

  • Identify methods or processes to improve RF PWB/PBA quality and yield based on technology demand

  • Support DMS activities as related to RF PWB/PBA designs

  • Ensures preferred part and supplier selection alignment with supply chain strategy.

  • Serves as conduit between the Engineering team and Operations Factories for resolving technical problems in the area of RF PWB and PBA design

  • Understands and implements a zero defect mentality

Typical Education & Experience

Typically a Bachelor's Degree and 10 years work experience or equivalent experience

Required Skills and Education

  • Strong background / experience in RF/Microwave Design

  • Strong background / experience with both the design and manufacturing of PWBs and PBAs with emphasis on DFM, DFT, New Product Introduction (NPI) to rate manufacturing, manufacturing process, and manufacturing readiness

  • Practical understanding of product development and the DoD product development lifecycle

  • Strong background in engineering and manufacturing principles

  • Experience with ADS modeling and simulation

  • Experience with Cadence Allegro / Cadence SIP schematic capture and layout tools
