BAE Systems Environmental Affairs Specialist (Water/Wastewater Program) in Kingsport, Tennessee
BAE Systems, Ordnance Systems Inc., is seeking an Environmental Affairs Specialist to provide program oversight for the Water-Wastewater Program at Holston Army Ammunition Plant in Kingsport, TN. The Environmental Affairs Specialist (Water-Wastewater Program) will work with state-of-the-art facilities. The ideal candidate is meticulous and able to balance technical oversight and effectively lead a team. The selected candidate will be responsible for development and implementation of programs and policies to ensure timely regulatory compliance, business alignment, and Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) objectives are met while maintaining cost effectiveness.
The Environmental Affairs Specialist:
o Maintains existing water/wastewater strategies and action plans to effectively meet current facility regulatory requirements and develops new strategies and plans to meet the changing landscape of environmental compliance.
o Develops and revises company policies and procedures in order to establish and promote the maintenance of an environmentally compliant, safe, accident free work environment.
This individual will provide regulatory guidance on all aspects of drinking water and wastewater regulations including permitting, training, auditing and assessments. In addition, this role will provide primary oversight of the facility s NPDES compliance laboratory and personnel. The position will report directly to the Environmental Manager.
The selected candidate will specialize in Federal and State environmental regulations such as permitting, regulatory applicability, and overall drinking water and wastewater compliance support. The selected candidate will work with maintaining drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater compliance. Actions include completing permitting projects for new, existing and modified facilities; compliance assurance with the existing permits; complete regulatory analysis for projects to determine how a rule applies to new, existing and modified facilities. The selected candidate must be able to prepare compliance reports and certifications.
The Environmental Affairs Specialist will:
Assist in developing and implementing programs for environmental monitoring, sampling activities, and support for the site on projects.
Compile and submit monthly discharge monitoring reports (DMRs), and other environmental reports.
Coordinate training for laboratory personnel.
Ensure data integrity for NPDES compliance laboratory.
Conduct field inspections and investigations.
Conduct permit renewal and modification activities as required.
Proactively monitor and ensure operational awareness and ability to comply with future regulations or industry trends.
Identify, analyze, manage and implement practical, cost-effective solutions to environmental and regulatory issues.
Directly contribute to the environmental budgeting processes.
Review and provide input to capital projects for environmental implications and drinking water/wastewater compliance.
Company Liaison with outside regulatory agencies as first point of contact during permit renewal and reporting processes.
Work with management to further influence company culture achieving environmental excellence.
Provide technical advice, coaching, guidance, and mentoring to employees on environmental initiatives and necessary changes.
Proactively support the site s ISO 14001 EMS to identify and mitigate potential environmental impacts, potential non-compliance, and adverse public perception.
Lead initiatives as appropriate to implement environmental programs to achieve compliance and continuous improvement.
Be responsible for personal safety and to promote a workplace culture recognizing safety as a core value through individual contribution and support of Company Safety Policies and Procedures and SHE department initiatives.
Typical Education & Experience
Typically a Bachelor's Degree and 4 years work experience or equivalent experience
Required Skills and Education
Bachelor of Science degree required preferably in Environmental / Chemistry / Engineering or related field and a minimum of 4 years of work experience in a position responsible for leading drinking water/wastewater environmental programs in a manufacturing setting and/or public works setting, or similar technical and/or supervisory role.
4 years experience working in an industrial setting, preferably the chemical industry.
Must have a thorough knowledge and understanding of EPA and the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) environmental permitting regulations and experience interacting with State agencies.
Ability to work independently and interact with representatives of regulatory agencies in a professional manner.
Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel and Outlook and be able to input and submit regulatory compliance and monitoring data in government electronic reporting formats.
Good analytical, problem solving and critical thinking skills.
Excellent communication skills with operations, management, and outside stakeholders.
Familiar with good laboratory practices (GLPs)
Ability to meet project deliverables and deadlines required.
Strong organization skills and the ability to communicate effectively.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with operations, management, and outside stakeholders.
Preferred Skills and Education
Certifications in the following areas are preferred: 40-hr. HAZWOPER, Certified stormwater inspector, lab analyst, water treatment or wastewater operator.
Experience in working in laboratory setting preferred.
Supervision experience a plus.
Wastewater operations experience a plus.
