BAE Systems Principal PCB Hardware Engineer in Endicott, New York

BAE Systems is looking for a printed wiring board (PWB) / circuit card assembly (CCA) engineer to join its design team in Endicott, NY. The PWB/CCA engineer will interact with PWB designers, Electrical/Mechanical Engineers and production facilities. The PWB/CCA engineer will support the development and production of ground and aerospace control electronics. Job responsibilities for the position include:
Engaging design engineers to develop producible and reliable PWB and CCA designs.
Ensure PWB/CCA designs are optimized for manufacturing.
Perform DFM (Design for Manufacturing) reviews of PWB/CCA designs to ensure producibility goals are met within technical, cost and schedule requirements.
Answer engineering and supplier questions affecting development and production designs.
Understand and implement IPC specifications such as IPC-6012,IPC-2221, J-STD-001, and IPC-610, among others as necessary.
Establish and maintain internal PWB/CCA best practices, requirements and standards.
Provide engineering support for new and improved manufacturing process development.
Provide technical support during the transition of designs to manufacturing.
Assist in the resolution of design issues identified during production.
Keep DFM standards up to date with improvements in manufacturing process capabilities.
Support failure analysis activities of PWB/CCA issues.
Review and evaluate manufacturing yield data and recommend design improvements for low yield designs.
Engaging industry contacts to help understand PWB/CCA problems and technology.
Support trade studies of alternative design approaches and make recommendations to the design team.
Create, support and/or maintain PWB and CCA roadmaps.
Recommend and support engineering improvement initiatives, including internal research and development.
Typical Education & Experience
Typically a Bachelor's Degree and 6 years work experience or equivalent experience
Required Skills and Education
Bachelor of Science in Engineering and a minimum of eight (8) yrs of experience in PWB/CCA design, fabrication, and manufacturing.
Strong technical foundation in printed circuit board design and fabrication.
Strong technical knowledge of manufacturing processes and materials related to PWB/CCA designs and production.
Knowledge of industry standards and common practices including but not limited to IPC-2221, J-STD-001, IPC-610, IPC-6012, IPC-600, IPC-6013 and the standards specified within them
Capacity and motivation for hard work.
Strong communications skills and ability to communicate effectively at all levels.
Experience using state-of-the-art technology, principles, tools and concepts is required.
Utilize computer skills to prepare appropriate reports and documents.
Make decisions using sound judgment while complying with policies, procedures, appropriate principles and applicable state and federal laws and regulations.
Demonstrated teamwork and leadership abilities.
Experience in performing failure analysis and root cause/corrective action for PWB/CCA failures.
Ability to read and understand engineering drawings, run-lists, and schematics.
Analyze, evaluate, develop and implement processes and systems within budget and adhere to time requirements and schedule.
Ability and desire to travel domestic and internationally to support process validation assessment efforts. Typically 6-8 trips per year.
Preferred Skills and Education
Familiarity and experience with flight, engine or industrial controls programs.
Familiarity with support equipment development for both engineering and manufacturing.
Experience developing mechanical requirements, designs, verification and validation of products, and product integration.
Experience with mechanical development lifecycle and development processes and procedures.
Experience in export control policies
Experience using Windchill PDM tools.
Familiar with manufacturing processes for high density interconnect (HDI) designs.
Experience evaluating design with DFM software tools such as ADIVA or Valor.
Experience using printed wiring board design tools, such as Mentor Graphics Expedition.
Working knowledge of commercial and military specifications and standards related to mechanical design and documentation.
Knowledge of mechanical design and analysis.
Experience developing and analyzing PWB/CCA yield and defect data.
