BAE Systems Safety & Health Specialist in Chula Vista, California
Preferred placement Chula Vista, CA (will consider Norfolk, VA depending on candidate qualifications and preference).
Reporting to the Business SHE Manager, the Piersides Safety & Health Specialist works independently to provide technical and professional safety, health and environmental support to BAE Systems managers and employees to improve the safety and health of our employees, ensure environmental risks are mitigated and ensure compliance with applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
Work with management, staff and field service employees to promote the development of a safety, health and environmental culture that exhibits the behaviors and processes outlined in the BAE Systems SHE management systems and processes.
Work with management to investigate SHE incidents, to determine causes and preventive measures.
Report or review findings from incident investigations, inspections, or environmental testing.
Inspect facilities, machinery, and equipment in order to identify and correct potential hazards, and to ensure safety and health regulation compliance.
Implement, review and revise as necessary, safety health and environmental programs to ensure their adequacy and effectiveness.
Review plans and specifications for construction of new machinery or equipment in order to determine if safety health and environmental requirements have been met.
Conduct or direct testing of air quality, noise, temperature, and/or radiation levels to verify compliance with health and safety regulations.
Confer with health professionals to assess health risks and develop ways to manage health issues related to occupational exposures.
Provide post-injury case management and worker s compensation consultation to management to ensure that workers receive adequate treatment and that cases are efficiently managed.
Ensure that all employees receive required SHE training.
Coordinate environmental functions and standards including required environmental records, reports, and permit applications and all applicable local, state, and federal regulatory authorities.
Maintains up-to-date knowledge of federal, state, and local legislation/regulations, and informs management of impact on operations.
Other duties required to fulfill Company and regulatory SHE requirements.
Work is performed in and around Naval shipyards and supports field service activities associated with Naval systems repair.
Ability to travel both domestic and international. Frequent travel required (up to 50%).
No direct reports however will work closely with assigned SHE representatives at three Pierside locations (Chula Vista, CA; Norfolk, VA; Jacksonville, FL).
Typical Education & Experience
Typically a Bachelor's Degree and 6 years work experience or equivalent experience
Required Skills and Education
Bachelor's degree in safety, environment or equivalent plus 6 years of relevant work experience.(May substitute equivalent experience, training and/or certifications for the degree. Relevant experience is job-related work that provides the necessary knowledge, skill, and abilities to perform the role.)
Thorough knowledge of SH&E regulations and modern SH&E management principlesCommunicate complex health and exposure information effectively with employees and all levels of management (written and verbal).Ability to work in a team environment and take initiative individually.
Manage time efficiently with little supervision.
Exceptional organizational skills and ability to prepare and present to all employee groups.
Experience facilitating meetings and working groups.
Ability to coach/consult with line management at all levels relative to building a culture and processes that lead to excellent SHE performance
Preferred Skills and Education
Experience working in/around shipyards
Experience working with employees who are deployed/field service/OCONUS
Will consider Norfolk VA for position location, depending on candidate qualifications/preference
